Ring nematode appears to be one of the most common nematode species affecting
peanuts in the North Carolina-Virginia production area. Plants appear stunted
and the foliage may be light green or slightly yellowed where high populations
of this nematode occur. Peanuts on affected plants will appear smaller than
normal even at maturity. The surface of pods will have a russetted appearance
as a result of the nematodes feeding during pod development. Severe
infestations of this nematode often cause symptoms similar to sting nematode
damage to peanut pods. The ring nematode, however, does not appear to be as
destructive to peanut roots as does the feeding injury caused by the sting
nematode.
