Pods in all phases of development are susceptible to pod rot caused by
Rhizoctonia solani. Unlike pod rot caused by Pythium myriothylum,
Rhizoctonia pod rot is characterized by a dry, russeting to browning of
pods. Severe decay of pods will leave only a skeleton of pods which is composed
of woody vascular tissues. Seed from infected pods will harbor the fungus after
drying and storing peanuts. If infected seed are planted, the fungus may cause
damping-off and death of seedlings.
