Entomology for the NC Master Gardener

Course Objectives

            The overall objective of this course is to familiarize North Carolina Master Gardener Volunteers with insects, in general, and with the insects which are most likely to be encountered in the landscape and on house plants.

Specific Objectives

·        Be able to determine what characterizes an insect

·        Know the body parts of an insect

·        Know the general internal systems of an insect

·        Develop a familiarity with the characteristics of several insect Orders

·        Know the ten most common insect pests in the landscape

·        Recognize common beneficial insects

·        Know common methods of insect pest management, especially those that are most environmentally friendly

·        Know where to seek answers to insect pest questions
