Cattle Ear Tags for Horn and Face Fly Management

The horn and face fly season will soon be here. With that in mind, I have revised the ear tag list that has been of assistance to some producers in past years (see below). I make no claims that the list is completely up-to-date, but it is a good quick guide. Two additions to the list for this year are Double Barrel, a combination ear tag, and a new organophosphate tag Commando

Remember there are no miracle tags. Some may be a little better than others, but the bottom line is that tags need to be used properly. Delay application until after June 1, if possible. Do not expect more than five good months of fly control for any of the tags. Replace them or use an alternate method of control at the end of their useful life. Do not leave them in all year. If you have used one type of tag for several seasons, change to one with an active ingredient in a completely different insecticide class. That is, switch to an organophosphate or combination tag if you have been using a pyrethroid tag.
