With the weather continuing so hot and dry, it’s hard to paint a very rosy picture of the present circumstances regarding cotton. Light trap levels appear well over their peak for the year, although lower or residual bollworm moths can still cause problems for cotton that has received timely rainfalls and is still fruiting normally. Eighty to 90 percent of our cotton acreage appears to be hurting for water, with yield prospects seemly declining by the day. One wonders if a category 1 or 2 hurricane might be preferable to a continuation of our present drought. Still, we have seen scattered spots where the yield prospects are good.
I expect the final flight of bollworm moths to begin sometime this coming week in Robeson County. In a typical year, this moth flight is of lower intensity than the preceding major flight, and often arrives too late to cause economic damage to mature cotton. In cotton with medium bolls all the way to the top, for the most part bollworms, stink bugs and plant bugs should not be an economic problem from here on out.
Scattered infestations of beet and fall armyworms are still being reported. Hot dry weather seems to favor these species. In the case of beet armyworms, where blooming has stopped the only way that this species could become a problem would be if high levels of beet armyworms were defoliating the leaves at the base of bolls that are required to fill out those bolls. This does not happen often in North Carolina. Fall armyworms can become established at this time of year in dry cotton, particularly if some blooms are available. These pests are capable of feeding on large bolls and are difficult to control. In most years, fall armyworms have a difficult time getting beyond the first or second stage in North Carolina once the first week of September is underway. Fortunately, throughout September most fall armyworms seem to die as second stage larvae feeding on the bracts of large and medium bolls down in the plant canopy.
No reports of significant spider mite or cotton aphid problems have been received this week. The weather and yield prospects just seem dominate most conversations lately.
From: Ames Herbert, Entomologist, Virginia Tech University, Tidewater Agricultural Research and Extension Center, Suffolk, Virginia
Pat Phipps, Plant Pathologist, Virginia Tech University, Tidewater Agricultural Research and Extension Center, has issued the following statement regarding Provost and Baythroid:
“A recent report has been verified that Provost and Baythroid are not compatible in tank mixes for control of leaf spot and corn earworms in peanuts. Whenever applying Provost with an insecticide for corn earworm control, growers will need to use an insecticide other than Baythroid for control of corn earworm. So far, this is the only product, other than what may be listed on the label, that is known to not be compatible with Provost.”

Spider mites continue to be a threat in certain areas while some other locations were helped late last week with good rainfall. Corn earworms have increased dramatically the past week and are above threshold in many fields. Due to the threat of spider mites, do not treat for “worms” unless it is a real threat to the crop. Also make sure of the species. A few beet armyworms are out there, but they are not as damaging as corn earworms.

Asiatic soybean rust has been confirmed on soybeans in a research plot and in a commercial field in Brooks County, Georgia, on the Florida border. This puts rust about 350 miles from Charlotte, 575 miles from Elizabeth City, 405 miles from Fayetteville, 300 miles from Murphy, 450 miles from Raleigh, 505 miles from Washington, 410 miles from Wilmington, and 415 miles from Winston-Salem.
To date, Asiatic soybean rust has been found on soybeans or kudzu in 5 counties in Alabama (1 on soybeans), 4 counties in Arkansas (all on soybeans), 11 counties in Florida (3 on soybeans), 5 counties in Georgia (1 on soybeans), 14 parishes in Louisiana (13 on soybeans), 2 counties in Mississippi (1 on soybeans), 5 counties in Oklahoma (all on soybeans), and 25 counties in Texas (24 on soybeans).
Weather conditions in North Carolina are currently too hot and dry to consider rust likely to thrive if it does arrive in the state. The same is true for most of Georgia and South Carolina.

If you remember "Captain Kangaroo," you may also remember the American elm in all its glory. Dutch elm disease killed a huge portion of the population, especially in the eastern United States. A native elm bark beetle (Fig. 1; Fig. 2; images by J. R. Baker; www.forestryimages.org ) and smaller European elm bark beetle spread this fungal disease among the trees. Scientists worked hard to develop an American elm that was resistant to the disease. Over recent years, several cultivars have been identified and released. We may never return to a street lined with large elms in every town, but the elm is worth a new look. In a bit of possible irony, it may turn out that elm is a good replacement for the threatened ash.
"Liberty" and "Princeton" are two such cultivars touted to be resistant. The Elm Research Institute claims that in 16 years, only 100 of 250,000 Liberty elm trees planted have died. The Princeton elms which line Washington Road in Princeton, New Jersey (see photograph at http://www.nytimes.com/imagepages/2004/05/07/nyregion/07elm_street.html) have been chosen to line Pennsylvanian Avenue in front of the White House in Washington, DC. (I don't know if that was a political decision.) The Princeton elm supposedly has ties to an elm that stands over the grave of Vice President Aaron Burr in a Princeton cemetery. (I've seen Aaron Burr's grave and he used to lie under two overgrown boxwoods.) Work performed at the National Arboretum showed that varieties Valley Forge, Jefferson NA3487, Princeton, Delaware and R18-2 showed the highest tolerance to Dutch elm disease, followed closely by New Harmony. There are also several hybrids available. Some have Asian origin. For more information, see the following web site: http://www.ars.usda.gov/IS/AR/archive/jul96/elms0796.htm.
It is stinging caterpillar season. Some of the stinging caterpillars are called slug caterpillars because their prolegs lack the tiny hooks that most other caterpillars have and the prolegs are so short that some of the slug caterpillars resemble slugs. Several species of slug caterpillars, saddleback caterpillars (image by J. R. Baker), hag moth caterpillars and stinging rose caterpillars have stinging hairs that can inflict a quite painful sensation.
Some people are sensitive to exposure and may require professional medical treatment. Slug caterpillars overwinter in tough silk cocoons. Moths emerge the following spring and summer and lay flat eggs on leaves of various trees and shrubs. Puss caterpillars (image by J. R. Baker) are one of the stinging caterpillars in the family of flannel moths. They produce a stinging sensation when brushed against due to tiny hollow spines, which are filled with an urticating fluid. Puss caterpillars feed on various deciduous trees and shrubs, especially oak, elm, hackberry, maple and sycamore trees. The moths are yellow-brown in color and have fluffy, wavy, white hairs. The young larvae sometimes feed in groups on the surface of the leaf. Older larvae devour the entire leaf. The caterpillars finally spin a dense cocoon in which they spend the winter. Puss caterpillars are usually not abundant enough to be noticed, although rare outbreaks may be widespread and may cause noticeable defoliation. Two generations probably occur each year, and the winter is spent in the cocoon spun some place on the host tree. Sevin or one of the Bacillus thuringiensis (B.t.) pesticides should give adequate control, although B.t. is not very effective on older caterpillars. Usually only a few are found and chemical control is not needed. Crush the insects with a stick or rock, if desired. You can also leave it alone. For more information, see the Extension publication Stinging and Venomous Caterpillars from the University of Florida at: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/IN014.
