FIELD AND FORAGE CROPS

From: Steve Koenning, Extension Plant Pathologist, and Jim Dunphy, Extension Soybean Agronomist

Soybean Disease Update

Soybean foliar diseases have been of minor importance so far this year. Many of the varieties most susceptible to frogeye leaf spot have been removed from the market. Still some varieties moderately susceptible to frogeye are still out there and conditions for disease development are favorable. Target spot has been identified at several locations in North and South Carolina. Unfortunately, this is a disease we have little experience with, but in 2004 and 2005 a number of fields suffered severe yield losses as a result of premature defoliation. Target spot will move fast following 1 to 2 days of rainfall. A strobilurin fungicide (Headline or Quadris) is most effective against this disease.

Six Reasons to Apply Fungicides to Soybean

  1. Target spot or frogeye leaf spot.

  2. Fungicides will generally increase yields by 1 to 2 bushels per acre in the absence of frogeye leaf spot or target spot. There are enough reports of larger increases that we are inclined to believe that higher returns are possible, but have not been able to predict where and when they will occur.

  3. September is the month we are most likely to be affected by hurricanes. This results in: a) high rainfall and humidity that are favorable for disease development; b) wet field conditions may prevent a timely harvest; and c) fungicides may prevent or slow down seed deterioration and loss of seed quality.

  4. Although it now seems likely we will see soybean rust in North Carolina in 2006, most of the crop is already too far along to be affected by rust. Late planted soybean is at greater risk from soybean rust than the early crop.

  5. Early maturing soybean is more likely to be affected by seed rots than late maturing soybean because it matures in hot humid weather. Seed quality improvement as a result of fungicide applications is more likely with early maturing soybean.

  6. A fungicide application, especially at R4 to R5, may improve the quality of soybean grown for seed and may allow these soybeans to remain in the field longer if there are delays in harvest.

Five Reasons Not to Apply Fungicides to Soybean

  1. You need a 3 to 4 bushel yield increase to pay for one application of a fungicide.

  2. Although fungicides will often improve seed quality, the improvement in quality rarely results in a premium.

  3. Rust may affect yield in a few late-planted soybeans this year, but any yield loss as a result of rust is likely to be limited.

  4. Even if you have frogeye leaf spot, many of the available varieties are only moderately susceptible.

  5. Because late maturing soybean matures in October/November, losses of seed quality and harvest delays due to weather are less likely.

Fall Webworms Blanket Western Counties

Fall webworms have been reported to be severe in several western North Carolina counties. I mentioned fall webworms in the July 14, 2006 issue of North Carolina Pest News (http://ipm.ncsu.edu/current_ipm/06PestNews/06News14/pestnews.html#title4). This hairy caterpillar webs the branches of many hardwood trees and makes them unsightly. There can also be a debris mess beneath. This is still primarily a cosmetic issue. Typically we see these mostly on pecans, sourwoods, and persimmons, but they have "branched out” to a broader selection of hosts this year. For a refresher, see the previous issue of North Carolina Pest News or Ornamental and Turf Insect Information Note No. 46 on fall webworms (http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/ent/notes/O&T/trees/note46/note46.html). I’m not certain why there is this unusual outbreak in the western region of the state.

In addition to the new fall webworm insect note mentioned above, Ornamental and Turf Insect Information Note No. 135 on the orangestriped oakworm is available on the web (http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/ent/notes/O&T/trees/note135/note135.html) in case anyone is in need of this handout information.

European Hornets: Slime Flux Reflux

European hornet (image by Kelly Groves) populations will soon be reaching their peak. I've had many reports about them visiting fluxing oak trees. I've also had many reports of them visiting lights and windows at night. The European hornet (Vespa crabro) is an introduced species and our only true hornet in North America. It builds large tan paper nests that are rarely free hanging. Nests are often located in hollow trees, but partially exposed. Sometimes they nest in structures. They are attracted to lights at night.

Like all wasps and hornets, they can be considered beneficial because they eat other insects. These hornets often eat other stinging insects. However, sometimes the nest location could place one at higher risk of being stung. Sometimes they strip bark from soft barked twigs. A normal foraging hornet, if left to tend to it's own business is usually not a threat. For more information about these mahogany and yellow colored hornets and how to control them if necessary, see Residential, Structural and Community Pests Insect Note No. 11 on the web at http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/ent/notes/Urban/eurohornet.htm.
