Preface

This curriculum was developed to address a shortage of 4-H entomology curricula for this age group, and as a continuation beyond the elementary level 4-H entomology curriculum available. It is hoped that 4-H’ers will use the life skills and concepts emphasized to be better citizens and stewards of their environment as they mature to adulthood. They will reach better understanding of where insects are found in the environment and the effects of environment on insects. They will better understand how insects affect people and how people affect insects.

Though the activities are based in the study of insects, leaders do not need training in entomology to conduct the exercises. Effort was made for the lessons to be fun, active, and social.

"Metamorphosis" was chosen as the name for this curriculum to represent the great changes that adolescents experience as they approach young adulthood. Care has been taken to respect the developmental characteristics of this age group and assure that the material is age-appropriate.

I wish to acknowledge the contributions or assistance from the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, Young Entomologists’ Society, and the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources. I thank James R. Baker for his artwork; Sharon R. Rowland, Ed Maxa, and Debbi Braswell for their reviews and suggestions; and Sue Cockrum, Brian Corey, Cyndi Lauderdale, and the others who helped pilot the activities. This publication was supported, in part, by a grant from the N.C. Agricultural Foundation.
